THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN ORGANIC FARMING

Nearly everyone has some idea of what organic agriculture is. There are lots of ideas out there. At
least some of them are wrong.I’ve also found recently that it’s not a topic that is brought up easily in the “conventional” agriculture world.

As we all know,The population of the planet is growing rapidly and providing food for the world is becoming extremely difficult every day. The need of the hour is sustainable cultivation and production of food for all. The Green Revolution and its chemical based technology are losing its appeal as dividends are falling and returns are basically unsustainable. Pollution and climate change are other negative features that are caused by the use of fossil fuel based chemicals. As of 2012, the market for organic farming and other products has reached $63 billion worldwide.

Organic agriculture has a history of being contentious and is considered by a wide range of some agronomists as an inefficient approach to food production. Yet organic foods and beverages are a rapidly growing market segment in the global food industry. Here,at Think Organic kenya, we examine the performance of organic farming in light of four main key sustainability metrics:

  1. Productivity.
  2. Environmental impact.
  3. Economic viability.
  4. Social wellbeing.
For improved and mantaining a maximum productivity production in organic agriculture,four main pillars are mainly used and include;
  • Principle of Ecological Balance: Organic farming must be modeled on living ecological systems. Organic farming methods must fit the ecological balances and cycles in nature.
  • Principle of Health: Organic agriculture must contribute to the health and well being of soil, plants, animals, humans and the earth. It is the sustenance of mental, physical, ecological and social well being. For instance, it provides pollution and chemical free, nutritious food items for humans.
  • Principle of Care: Organic agriculture should be practiced in a careful and responsible manner to benefit the present and future generations and the environment.
  • Principle of Fairness: Fairness is evident in maintaining equity and justice of the shared planet both among humans and other living beings. Organic farming provides good quality of life and helps in reducing poverty. Natural resources must be judiciously used and preserved for future generations.

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN ORGANIC FARMING
  1. Celebrate the Culture of Agriculture:
Food is a ‘language’ spoken in every culture. Making this language organic allows for an important cultural revolution whereby diversity and biodiversity are embraced and chemical toxins and environmental harm are radically reduced, if not eliminated.
  2. Free of poison: Organic farming does not make use of poisonous chemicals, pesticides and weedicides. Studies reveal that a large section of the population fed on toxic substances used in conventional agriculture have fallen prey to diseases like cancer. As organic farming avoids these toxins, it reduces the sickness and diseases due to them.
  3.  Promote Biodiversity: Visit an organic farm and you’ll notice something: a buzz of animal, bird and insect activity. These organic oases are thriving, diverse habitats. Native plants, birds and hawks return usually after the first season of organic practices; beneficial insects allow for a greater balance, and indigenous animals find these farms a safe haven
  4. Better Nutrition: As compared to a longer time conventionally grown food, organic food is much richer in nutrients. Nutritional value of a food item is determined by its mineral and vitamin content. Organic farming enhances the nutrients of the soil which is passed on to the plants and animals.
  5. Avoid Hasty and Poor Science in Your Food: Cloned food,GMOs and rBGH. just how Interesting these food technologies were rushed to market. Organic is the only de facto seal of reassurance against these and other modern, lab-produced additions to our food supply.
  6. Longer shelf–life: Organic plants have greater metabolic and structural integrity in their cellular structure than conventional crops. This enables storage of organic food for a longer time.
  7. Protect Future Generations: Before a mother first nurses her newborn, the toxic risk from pesticides has already begun. Studies show that infants are exposed to hundreds of harmful chemicals in utero. Also,Numerous studies show that pesticides can adversely affect the nervous system, increase the risk of cancer, and decrease fertility.
  8. Enhanced Taste: The quality of food is also determined by its taste. Organic food often tastes better than other food. The sugar content in organically grown fruits and vegetables provides them with extra taste. The quality of fruits and vegetables can be measured using Brix analysis.
  9. Air and climate change: Organic agriculture reduces non-renewable energy use by decreasing agrochemical needs (these require high quantities of fossil fuel to be produced). Organic agriculture contributes to mitigating the greenhouse effect and global warming through its ability to sequester carbon in the soil.
  10. Reduce The Toxic Load: (Keep Chemicals Out of the Air, Water, Soil and our Bodies)Buying organic food promotes a less toxic environment for all living things. Our bodies are the environment so supporting organic agriculture doesn’t just benefit your family, it helps all families live less toxically.
CONCLUSION
Organic farming methods combine scientific knowledge and modern technology with traditional farming practices based on thousands of years of agriculture. In general, organic methods rely on naturally occurring biological processes, which often take place over extended periods of time, and a holistic approach.Crop diversity is a distinctive characteristic of organic farming.Organic food market is one of the fastest growing businesses in the world with an increase in demand due to the perceived advantage of such food.

  1. We all should grow and/or consume organic...this is high time to talk and then practice about how we go organic...This is important..to know how our small farmers and urban growers can go organic....land and soil already had chemical fertilizers, pesticides...we grow following modern methods...how we go organic. Should be simple and doable. Please continue to write along these line.
    Best regards

    1. thank you Dr. Iqbal Zuberi,i feel its time we start talking about it before its too late.its people like us who can ignite this talk for the better and enable especially small scale farmers to make informed decisions.thank you

  2. Very well written.
I do have a problem with No 4 Bettet Nutrition.
Unfortunately there is no criteria for quality in organic certification. Even though we have chemical free produce it doesn't necessarily mean we have good nutritional food.
It is time the organic movement started to implement a quality control, then we would see an even bigger change into organic consumption and organic production

    1. yeah, thats true.the criteria for quality in organic ertification is not up to standard!
Actually, studies show that organic crops have about 50 percent more anthocyanins and flavonols compared with conventional crops. Anthocyanins are compounds that give fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, their blue, purple and red hues.where Consumption of these compounds is linked to a variety of benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects. Also other study finds that organic dairy and meat contain about 50 percent more omega-3 fatty acids.where the Omega-3s are linked to reductions in cardiovascular disease, improved neurological development and function, and better immune functionr.thats according to Chris Seal, a professor of food and human nutrition at Newcastle University in the U.K.

    2. It is kind of clear that the organic grown crops are healthier. It's has to do with the plant intake system and it's related to soil health and soil function. The Brix is one clear indication. Usually the Brix is significantly higher in organic crops.

  3. Theoretically organic crop should be healthier. Why? because when applying organic method the soil gets much healthier and fertile. The main source of nutritiousness to the plant come from the soil. So good soil will favorably effect the quality of the crop.

    2. I am an agriconimst. I'm deeply involved with the business that related to soil. As you may know the soil is the main source of life. The soil is a concern (in many aspects) for the local, state, nation and the entire world. I am focusing on a soil and plant health at the business level.

    3. without soil,no life really.but with proper siol care, much production is very much rael.we do need people like you for much support in our push towards an organic world

  4. I would like to request all those who feel for the need of going organic to frame a set of 'rule and regulations'..so that a uniform 'organic production system' can be established. This can be a voluntary but rigid one which will help us to make organic farming easy to adopt and popularize.

    1. A fantastic idea i should say,the only problem being implementation and political dilution of such an idea.with great support, its very much attainable with undisputed results

  5. Dr. Zuberi, growing organic is an important element of the EcoSystem. But it is one element. When it comes to EcoSysytem you start dealing with governments and politicians (local, States and nations). The problem starts at this point.

  6. Dear Dr Eran,
Yes, you are very right, when we consider the whole picture, the system, we have to consider all the components and interactions. And it is really impossible to deal with the whole..the entire system..together.
What we have to do is to start small....start individual...with our own capabilities...involve the small farmers we know, with our friends and relatives first. Gradually we expand..scale up...and as we face the problems we deal with them one by one...If start this ourselves, in an international group together... we can help each other, support each other...we can develop common procedures, rules and regulations...follow them..make our effort 'international'. Do think I am right ?

    1. very right Dr. Iqbal Zuberi, the key here is to start small and be patient enough.with determination and desire, the idea is very much possible...

    2. Yes, Dr. Zubery, you are absolutely right. Someone, somewhere should start the clock. I agree with you and believe that the small farmers can lead the way and at the same benefit economically. Small farmers should get support from the local government. Mainly technical support, market facilitating, transportation and at least minimal legal protection (labeling) and etc. In short you still need a political will.

  7. Hi all, it is great effort to popularise organic products. Commercial farmers have to bear few losses initially, as the yield from chemical to organic will take some time, no doubt once land is accommodated with organic will double the net profit.
My thought is chemicals in market should be controlled by government and access to it should be minimised. And government should heavily tax chemicals to make high cost, then farmers will tend to regularise organic.

  8. When personally coonfronted by the question of where do you see the future of agriculture,i always say organic.
many people dont tend to agree with me since they come up with very easy questions in my mind but present them as being very hard to tackle from their side.
can organic farming feed the world? is it more nutritious really? being the most common questions,..
Well look,a century ago if you would have mentioned that great USA will ever be ruled by a black man,you would probably be taken to a mental hospital, but hey look!it happened!
so personally with commitment, passion and desire to change the world of agriculture for the better its very much attainable.
The only sacrifice being not settling for anything less than the real deal.thank you..
